The Outsiders is about a young boy living in Tulsa Oklahoma in the 60’s with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop. His parents died leaving his older brother Darry to take care of him and Soda. They are also members of the Greaser gang rivals of the Socs. One night Ponyboy decides to go out to the drive-in with Jonny, Two-bit, and Dallas. There they end up meeting two Soc girls Marcia and Cherry. Pony offers them a ride home when their boyfriends show up. They are about to get in a fight but it is broken up by Cherry and Marcia. Later Jonny and Pony fall asleep outside, when Pony wakes up he hurries home because he knows Darry will be mad. When he arrives home Darry slaps him and Pony is so upset that he takes Johnny and runs away. They go to a park and there, a group of Soc boys show up. They get in a fight and a Soc is about to drown Pony in a fountain when Jonny stabs him and kills him. They go to Dallas for assistance and he then tells them to retreat to the country where they hide out in an abandon church. Later Dallas shows up and takes them into town. When they return the church is on fire with children trapped inside. Johnny and Pony run inside to save them. When inside the church a fiery beam falls on Johnny and he dies. After that Dallas gets so upset because Johnny was all he had left in life he robs a store and gets shot by the police. Pony goes back to school and is having a really hard time with his grades due to his losses. His English teacher agrees that if he can construct a well-written paper he will be able to pass the class. So the story of the Outsiders is an account of Pony's life.
