Technical control Through the use of technology Big Brother has access to the homes of the people in Oceania. Telescreens like flat screen television are placed in peoples homes in order to monitor their every move. Telecereens are so advanced they can detect one's breath rate and even their heart rate.
Governmental Control 1984 is based on a totalitarian governmental system. Orwell based his fictional government on Nazi Germany. In his novel Big Brother controls every aspect of ones life, when they eat, who they can marry, what their job is, and "friendships" with others. There should be nothing in one's mind except for love and support for Big Brother and the Party. The Party does this by outlawing books, limiting vocabulary, and arresting anyone that is unorthodox or is suspect of free thought.
Demise of the human brain and spirt Winston broke many rules of Big Brother. Possession of a journal, expressing free individual thought, plotting against the government, and loving Julia. In return Big Brother broke his spirt. He was tortured and beaten to the point of nothingness. Only him mind numbing love for the government prevails.
