Social Class: In the Outsiders, there are two main social groups. The Socs appear to have higher social class due to their wealth, and the Greasers are less fortunate. Most of them don’t have much money, are without parents, or are and have been abused. What determines what gang a child is in depends on what side of Tula they were born on.
Definition of family: The Greaser gang acts as a family, they all care for each other deeply. The gang is the closest to a family that some of the gang members may have. A prime example of this is Jonny. Jonny’s parents treat him horribly. He is neglected and when he is noticed he is often beaten by his father. However, the Greaser gang treats him like family. Sticking by him no matter what. Family does not have to be blood.
Breaking Stereo-types: The Greasers have a reputation of being hooligan, delinquent, uncontrollable children. Not the type of people that would step out of their way to do something heroic or even good. However, Johnny and Pony two of the members of the Greaser gang saved children from a burning church, sacrificing their lives for the lives of others. This is breaking the stereotype. It is easy to judge someone or a group of people buy their stereotype. However, stereotypes often are not true.
