In the novel 1984, a government system called "Big Brother" has taken over. Under Big Brother's rule one has absolutely no privacy. People have telescreen placed in there houses that watch them in their homes so there is no possible way to escape the eyes of Big Brother. Also there is no room for close relationships, one is not allowed to have friends merely comrades because friend is too strong of a word. Marriage and sex is just for the greater good of the government. To have children is to produce more spices and followers of the government. So marriage is not for one's own pleasure no one is not allowed to marry one they are attracted to or enjoy sex. Thought is a major issue, if one expresses thought or just a twinge of an emotion such as anxiety they will be sent away by the thought police. The main character of the novel is a man named Winston Smith. Winston works correcting documents, speeches, and reports written my Big Brother. His job is to make sure Big Brother is correct no matter what. For instance, if Big Brother stated that a bomb hit Mexico but in reality the bomb hit Ecuador Winston would change this. Winston is an intelligent man, thought the beginning of the novel Winston begins questioning the ways of the government. He buys a journal and begins writing down his thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Which of course is a crime to have a book because education gives power to the people. As Winston writes down his thoughts he becomes more and more unsatisfied with his life. He begins thinking of rebellion and uprising. Winston is in a relationship with a man named O'Brian. Winston believes that O'Brian is a part of the brother hood a group against the Party and Big Brother. Winston also knows a girl that works in the fiction department named Julia. Winston is captivated by her but also disliked her greatly because he knows that he will never have a chance to be with her. One day that changes, Julia falls down and when Winston goes to help her up she hands him a note stating her feelings towards him. This is the beginning of their secret love affair. Winston also get closer with O'Brian and wants to plan a rebellion with him. During Hate week which is propaganda for the government Winston is given a book. He then goes with Julia up to the secret above the shop where he bought his diary to read it. Later that night the thought police catch him and Julia because there was a small telescreen concealed by a photo. They are taken to the Ministry of Love and are tortured O'Brian was never meant to help them. There Winston is tortured by O'Brain. However he still clings to him undying love for Julia. This cannot be, all of Winston's thoughts and emotions should be on total dedication and love for the Party and Big Brother. He is taken to room 101 where one meets his deepest fear and then betrayed Julia. He is completely broken mentally and physically. Giving into Big Brother and his love for the Party.
